On-grid, off-grid or hybrid solar: choose by outcome, not terminology
Compare bill saving, outage backup, battery dependence and operating behaviour before selecting a solar architecture.
Updated By KGDC Enterprises LLP · Corporate solar guidanceStart with the result you need. If the priority is reducing the electricity bill and the grid is reliable, on-grid is usually the simplest architecture. If there is no dependable grid, off-grid may be appropriate. If you need both grid interaction and selected-load backup, assess a hybrid system.

SEE HOW IT WORKS
The concept, made visible.
On-grid solar
Solar serves live loads and the approved meter accounts for grid import and eligible export. It normally offers the lowest storage-free lifecycle cost. Anti-islanding means the inverter disconnects during an outage.
Off-grid solar
The system operates independently of the utility network. Solar generation, battery capacity and inverter output must cover the agreed load and autonomy period, including poor-weather days. Oversizing or load discipline may be needed.
Hybrid solar
A hybrid system coordinates solar, battery and grid. It can keep selected circuits alive during an outage, but ‘whole-building backup’ should never be assumed. Essential loads, surge demand, battery usable capacity, changeover time and black-start behaviour must be specified.
Five questions that decide the architecture
How reliable is your grid? Which loads must run during a cut? How many hours of backup are needed? What is the maximum simultaneous kW demand? Is your priority lowest cost, resilience, higher solar self-use—or a defined balance of all three?
Compare lifecycle cost, not only purchase price
Include battery warranty, usable depth of discharge, cycle life, expected replacement, monitoring, ventilation or thermal management, service capability and future expansion. A battery is valuable when it solves a defined outage or tariff problem.
